Diesel, Electric or LPG: Which Forklift Should You Buy?

The Forklifter guide: diesel, electric or LPG forklift, which to buy

Each fuel has a job it is best at. Diesel for outdoor and heavy work, electric for clean indoor floors, LPG in the middle. Here is how to pick for your site.

Diesel: the outdoor workhorse

Diesel forklifts are the strong, all-weather choice for outdoor and heavy work, yards, container handling, steel and rough ground. They lift the heaviest loads, refuel in a minute, and keep going all day. The trade is fumes and noise, so they are not for closed indoor spaces like food or pharma floors.

If most of your lifting is outside or heavy, diesel is usually the right buy. It is the most common used machine on the market too, so there is plenty of choice.

Electric: clean and quiet for indoors

Electric forklifts run on a battery, so they are quiet, have no fumes, and are perfect for indoor warehouses, food, pharma and clean floors. Running cost is low and there is less to service. The trade is a higher price to buy, and you plan around charging and the battery, which is a real cost to check on a used one.

Electric is the fastest growing type in the world for good reason. For an indoor operation, it is often the best long term money, as long as you check the battery health when buying used.

LPG: the middle ground

LPG forklifts run on gas bottles and sit between diesel and electric. They are cleaner than diesel so they can work indoors with good airflow, yet they still refuel fast by swapping a bottle and handle decent loads. They are popular where a business needs one machine that can move between inside and outside jobs.

If your work is mixed, some indoor and some outdoor, LPG is a flexible pick. It is less common in some markets, so availability depends on your country.

Which fuel is right for your site?

Match the fuel to where you work. Choose diesel for outdoor and heavy jobs, electric for clean indoor floors and long term running cost, and LPG when you need one machine for both inside and outside. Your load weight, your floor and your hours decide it more than anything else.

Frequently asked questions

Is a diesel or electric forklift better?

Diesel is better for outdoor and heavy work. Electric is better for clean indoor floors and lower running cost. The right one depends on where you work and what you lift.

Can you use a diesel forklift indoors?

Only in large, well ventilated spaces, because of the fumes. For closed indoor areas, food or pharma floors, choose electric or, with good airflow, LPG.

Are electric forklifts worth the higher price?

For indoor work and long hours, usually yes. Lower running cost and less service can pay back the higher purchase price over time. On a used one, check the battery health first.
