What Size Forklift Do I Need? A Simple Capacity Guide

Heavy-duty forklift with a tall mast at an industrial yard

A quick way to choose forklift capacity by your load, from 2 ton pallet work to 10 ton steel and containers, with a safety margin built in.

What forklift capacity do I need?

Match the forklift to your heaviest single load and add about 20 percent as a safety margin. As a rough guide: 2 to 3 ton for light pallets, 5 ton for general factory and container work, and 7 to 10 ton for steel, machinery and full containers. If a load sits between two sizes, take the bigger one.

What you are liftingForklift to rent
Boxes, light pallets, shop stock2 ton
Standard warehouse pallets3 ton
Mixed factory and container work5 ton
Heavy goods, machinery, big containers7 ton
Steel, very heavy industrial cargo10 ton

Why does the load center matter?

A forklift's rated capacity assumes the load sits at a standard distance from the forks, usually 500 to 600 mm. If your load is long or its weight sits far out on the forks, the safe capacity drops. So a 5 ton forklift may safely lift less than 5 ton if the load is awkward. When loads are long or off-center, go a size up.

This is why we always ask what you are lifting, not just the weight. Tell us the size and shape too, and we match the right machine.

What about lift height?

Capacity and height work together. The higher you lift, the less weight a forklift can safely carry, and tall racking needs a reach truck or a high-mast machine, not a standard forklift. Tell us your top stacking height and we make sure the mast can reach it safely.

For narrow aisles and high racks, a reach truck is usually the answer. For lifting up and out on a site, a telehandler fits better.

Still not sure which size to rent?

You do not have to figure it out alone. Send us the heaviest load, its rough size, your stacking height and the kind of site, and we recommend the right capacity. Getting this right keeps the job safe and stops you paying for more machine than you need.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bigger forklift always better?

No. A forklift that is too big costs more, is harder to move in tight spaces, and can damage floors. The goal is the right size for your load, with a small safety margin, not the biggest one.

What does "rated capacity" mean?

It is the maximum weight a forklift can safely lift at a standard load distance and height. Awkward, long, or high loads lower the safe weight, so always share the load details.
